How easier it is to backup iTunes

Having large iTunes libraries makes transference to new hard drive difficult. The most important part of backing up files is to make sure if everything which is crucial has been included or not. How panic it would be to restore from scratch if downloaded, converted and organized iTunes gets damaged. But where all these files are stored, and what is the optimal way to get them back onto your hard drive.

Media is stored in an itunes Folder that is stored on your hard drive. However, this folder is synchronized according to the system compatibility. In Mac this folder is located in Music Folder, (Finder > Users > User name > Music) and In XP, this folder can be located in My Music folder that lies in My Documents folder, and Windows 7/Vista users can find it in the Music folder of their Libraries.

If somehow you are not able to find the location where your file is located then you can find it out by going to the i tunes' Preferences menu (Mac: iTunes > Preferences, PC: Edit > Preferences) and clicking the Advanced tab. You can browse the dialog box iTunes Media Folder Location which is placed at the top of the window. Using this feature you can locate where your is being stored.

Once the required folder is found, iTunes can be backed up. This is alike to drag and drop the folder to your external hard drive icon. However, the folder itself doesn't move. A copy of this folder is made so that it can be used to restore digital media in future. As iTunes keep on changing, deleting or adding on regular basis, it is necessary to make sure the software in place which has scheduled backup facility has latest versions of your files and copied to your external drive.

At times, this comes with your drive, In Windows 7, Backup and Restore are being set up and In Mac, users have to configure Time Machine to get backup of iTunes in similar way. Now if anytime your iTunes gets damaged due to some malfunctioning, virus or whenever you need it then it can retrieved readily as your media collection has been copied to safe and secure location.
