Recovering BKF file saved on multiple-tape set

NTBackup is an in-built utility in the Windows (NT, 2000, Server 2003, and XP) systems that is used to create the backup of all kinds of files and folders. It is an extremely useful utility that can be backed up to tapes, ZIP drives, floppy disks, and hard drives. It also provides seamless integration with Task Scheduler to enable automated backup of selected files and folders. However, as happens with most things, the BKF files are also prone to corruption. This can happen because of various reasons such as power surges, virus infections, incomplete backup process, etc. You can get the backup again if you have the data whose backup was created. Otherwise, you should use a third-party BKF recovery application to repair BKF file.

Consider a scenario wherein you have created a backup in the form of a .bkf file using NTBackup on a multiple tape set. When you try to restore the data, you are unable to do so and the following error message is displayed:

Error: An Inconsistency Was Encountered on the Requested Media" Error Message with NTBackup.”

The error message signifies that the backup created on the tape has corrupted and is, therefore, inaccessible.

Cause:
The most possible cause for this error message is that the backup may have corrupted. It could have happened because of various reasons such as power surges, virus infections, corrupt operating system, problem in the storage media.
Another possible reasons is that as you have taken the backup on a multiple-tape set and the data is placed in two different backup sets on two different tapes. Sometimes NTBackup prompts you to mount the incorrect set of media to restore the data. This is also the reason why the error message is displayed.

Resolution:
To solve this issue, you should try to select and restore only from one backup set at one time. This would address the issue. However, if the issue is not resolved then you should use a third-party BKF repair tool to repair BKF file. Such read-only tools are capable of safe BKF recovery without overwriting the corrupt data.
