Consider a scenario wherein you have to take create separate backup instances of different folders locations in your system. You run the NTBackup utility and create the backup. But when you run the utility again to restore the data, you cannot find the catalog files in the bkf files. These catalog files enable NTBackup to restore the BKF files. You may have successfully created the backup but still you may get the following error messages:
The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used.
The backup file is unusable. You must erase it, or choose another file.
An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media.
Cause:
NTBackup creates catalog files for every completed BKF file and stores it in the following location:
“SystemRoot\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\catalogs51”
The catalog files are listed in the “Items to restore” section from where you can select the respective file to restore. When you create multiple backup at the same time, the catalog files share the identical “timestamp”attribute, which leads to ambiguity in the catalog files. As a result, the catalog files of the bkf files that are not created and, thus, are missing.
Resolution:
In this scenario, the bkf files get corrupted and you need to use a BKF repair tool for the maximum recovery of data. These read-only tools employ fast and effective scanning algorithms that recover the lost data safely. These tools are highly interactive and do not require having any prior technical knowledge.
